Are you looking for a legitimate work-at-home job to fill your days and bank account? Luckily, job seekers have many remote job opportunities to choose from today. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 28% of employed individuals worked from home, a rate four times higher than the pre-pandemic level of about 7% in 2019.
If you are looking for a company that will allow you to permanently work remotely, here are 101 options to get you started. Some examples include bookkeeping, data entry jobs, customer service reps, and more. According to Statista, the tech sector has the highest share of employees working primarily remotely, with 67% of employees reporting.
I can’t guarantee these companies on my list are hiring at the moment, but they commonly are looking to hire, so you can definitely keep an eye on them. And be sure to check out FlexJobs for high-quality, researched remote job listings.

Community Moderators
Moderators manage and monitor user-generated content on a client’s website or social media platforms. You may be approving or deleting blog comments, answering questions in a forum, policing a chat room, responding to Tweets or Facebook comments, generating buzz, providing for child safety, preventing scams, or similar and related tasks.
In some cases, no background in social media management is required. You just need to be social media savvy—you should understand various social media systems, use social media often, and understand hashtags, what kind of content trends, and so on. There are many companies that hire community moderators, but here are a few to get you started:

Freelance Writers & Editors
The internet wouldn’t be what it is today without tons and tons of useful and compelling content. And where there’s tons of content, there’s a huge need for writers and editors. YOU could be that writer (or editor)—provided you have excellent grammar, can hit your deadlines, and have fantastic research and writing skills.
Like community management, formal education or a bachelor’s degree is not necessarily required for freelance work-from-home gigs. You will likely need to provide a few writing samples with your application, but that shouldn’t be too hard to do provided you are starting in areas in which you have some knowledge and expertise. If you can’t manage to get a few publications under your belt before applying as a freelance writer or editor with a company, simply start a blog and publish your pieces there. You could even offer to do a guest post for a friend if you don’t want to set up an entire blog by yourself.
Here are a few sites that hire writers on a regular basis:

Nurses
Did you know that even nurses can work at home? It’s true! As long as you have a healthcare degree, are licensed for the state in question, and have recent clinical experience, you have the opportunity to find work from home. These positions are primarily triaged help desks fielding patient questions and assessing their symptoms. You may also find work as a consultant for a health insurance company or even with legal counsel. You often need prior experience for these, with emergency room and previous phone triage experience preferred.

At-Home Phone Agents
Perhaps the most plentiful and easy-to-land remote job is as a call center agent. Positions are available for both inbound and outbound calls. A company may hire employees or independent contractors depending on the location and job requirements, so make sure you pay attention when reading the job listings. There are some full-time and part-time work opportunities out there. Most of these positions do require a quiet work environment. So if you have kids, these are best scheduled when the kids are in school or bed. You’ll also typically need a reliable computer with high-speed Internet access and a dedicated landline. Many of these customer service agent jobs are available to you even if you don’t have much in the way of experience; when experience is required, they’re looking for customer service experience – the easiest experience to come by! Have you ever worked in retail or in food service? You’ve got customer service experience!

Search Engine Evaluators
The unique position of a Search Engine Evaluator is one that’s grown up with the expansion of the Internet – basically, search engine evaluators help improve search engine results by analyzing search strings and their results for relevancy and usefulness. Many of my readers love these positions as they provide a lot of scheduling flexibility and pay decently. That being said, positions are often project-based and can end abruptly. Some companies even cap the length of time you can spend working for them! Make sure you’ve got your eggs in more than one work-at-home job basket with this job type.

Teachers
There are many opportunities for teachers to work from home, from actually teaching online courses to a side gig of becoming a tutor for children all over the world to keeping online office hours to advise university students. There are even opportunities for those who’ve never taught before – if you’re a native English speaker, there are work-from-home opportunities out there for you to teach English over the Internet (as a second language). Additional opportunities for teachers include test scoring, curriculum creation, selling worksheets, and so much more. Requirements and prerequisites vary greatly by position.

Transcription
Hey there, what’s your number? Your number of words per minute, that is. There’s always a need for more transcriptionists online. A transcriber turns the spoken word into written text. While performing transcription work, you may transcribe audio of a court case, provide captions for a video or live performance, transcribe medical information, etc.
Payment varies widely in this industry, with low starter pay rates going up to pretty good pay for experienced and certified transcribers. (Certification is required for some legal or medical transcription jobs.) Pay is also often based on production, which means the faster and more accurately you type, the more money you can make. Below is a list of great places to find transcription jobs:

Brandi says
I completely support my family working from home for an online college. Keep in mind, though, work from home doesn’t always mean “keep your kids with you.” There’s no way I could do my job if my daughter was home instead of in daycare! (She’s 2).
Joe says
Brandi – Can you say what online college you work for, what you do and what qualifications you needed? If you are an educator, I’m out. But I do have a B.A., I’m a great typist, am good with grammar and spelling and am highly organized. I currently have a great paying full time job, but it’s a grind and quite the commute.
Athena Barcelo says
Brandi,
What is the name of the Online College you work for? Do they hire people to answer the phones for them at home, and what qualifications are they looking for?

Katie Peters says
My company hires people as editors to work from home as independent contractors. We do quality control and editing on mystery shoppers’ reports–thousands and thousands of them every month. It is a great job for detail-oriented people who are grammar geeks, comfortable on computers, and willing to perservere through the weeks it takes to learn the forms, standards, and software. We pay a flat rate per form, even while we’re training you, but it usually takes a couple months to get to where an editor is making the $12/hour that the average editor makes. I began editing over 5 years ago, and I’m now a manager. WordsmithPros.com

Thanks, Katie!

I work in direct sales from home! Its been amazing! My husband is the main source of income and I stay home with the kids and “work” during their nap time! It’s been fun to bring in money for things that we don’t have to budget for or buying groceries and have extra room in the budget! I know some girls use this as their full time job and only income source…I’m not at that point yet but we’re getting closer!!!!

Leslie says
I would LOVE to find an at home billing job as I have years of experience but nothing in my area offers it! I work full time now in accounting/finance but I am needing a second job to bring a decent amount of extra income into the home. Most of these sadly, I do not qualify for or they require more than part time working hours. I’ve looked all over for work at home billing jobs, or even data entry but most have you take a test and fill out an application but never respond! I have applied for a few from here, with the same situation. Thanks for the info you have provided, I will keep looking!! 🙂
Angie Nelson says
Check out Business Bookkeeping Academy, Leslie. I believe their next class is starting in September.

damongo.com – Great for micro jobs, users and listing seem to be increasing at a steady rate.
seoclerks.com – Good for SEO related stuff
gigbux.com – Similar to damongo, quite a few micro jobs.
mycheapjobs – another one with a hefty amount of micro jobs
Angie Nelson says
Thanks, Chi!

Milrich Associates is a Virtual Assistant company that I have worked with for the past year. I am the Scheduling Coordinator for about 35 at home schedulers that cross the US. We are currently not hiring (unless you are awesome) but we probably will be within a month or two.
Angie Nelson says
Awesome, Amy. Let me know when you are hiring and I’ll let my readers know.
Melissa says
Being in sales can also provide a great work from home opportunity. I used my years of retail and management skills to become a sales rep for a reputable company. Usually the company headquarters is located elsewhere and you will have a specific geographic area to cover while working from a home office.
Angie Nelson says
Thanks, Melissa.
Rebecca says
You should add Sitel, Apple, Concentrix, and Southerlands to your phone voice Positions.
Angie Nelson says
Thanks, Rebecca. I’ll do that.
Denise Wiggins says
Hi, can you tell me where you previously mentioned phone voice positions? I only see the follow-up from Rebecca.
Thank you.

She is referring to the phone agent section in the above post.
Denise Wiggins says
Ok. Thank you for clearing that up.
Christina Vinci says
I am looking for a permanent Administrative Assistant-Clerical-Data Entry work from home position with good pay and benefits. Does anyone know of any good companies? I had applied to some on the list here, but have not heard back.
Angie Nelson says
Keep at it, Christina. Sometimes it takes several months or several tries to hear back.
Avery Breyer says
I can vouch for the viability of freelance writing. I was able to get into it with no prior experience, no credentials, and no contacts – yet very quickly got to the point where I was making $60 per hour of my time. There is lots of demand for it if you know where to look, and once you get away from the content mills and find your own clients directly, you can make a good living.
Angie Nelson says
That’s awesome, Avery!
MJ says
How do you get started in freelance like you did Avery Breyer? Everything I have looked at wants you to buy their e-book to get started. Thanks.

Gayle says
I’m also looking for data entry or proofreading jobs. Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you so much!
Angie Nelson says
Hi, Gayle. Legitimate data entry jobs are extremely hard to come by. Sadly, most of those available are extremely low paying.
There are a lot of options with proofreading and editing however. Most sites that hire writers are also looking for editors. You may also want to check out Caitlin’s transcript proofreading post https://theworkathomewife.com/transcript-proofreader-jobs-from-home/.
Halli says
Hey, I am very new at all of this but I am in dying need of a job. But sad to say where I live I am unable to get fast speed internet. Is there any particular job that anyone knows of that you can get from home without having fast speed internet. I have a 2 month old baby and with the world the way it is I rather raise him myself. Please help
Angie Nelson says
Hi, Halli. Most customer service or chat jobs will require high-speed internet as your connection greatly impacts your ability to do your job. most have you logging into their system to perform the work. Freelance writing or something similar would be a great fit however.
Barb says
Thank you for all your wonderful info this year. I hope you have a wonderful, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

Manpreet says
Hello,
This is my first visit to your site after I read your contribution to an article about the monetization strategies in 2016.
About this post, you truly introduced me to some different ways to earn money from home. I started off my career as a content writer and then moved on to become a full-time blogger. But it all started with my curiosity to find out about different ways to earn money online. And now that I know of a few more ways, I am really excited to try some new ways.
Thanks for listing down all the websites. It would be great if we can have you review the best of these sites. I know it’s tough but maybe you can gradually cover all of them (if you have done already, please reply back with the link to those posts).
Let me know what you think. 🙂
Angie Nelson says
There are several sites that do that, Manpreet. But, it isn’t something we are interested in at this time. I appreciate your feedback however.
Mindy says

I would love to be able to be home before and after for them, and will have some downtime. Only thing is I need to earn enough to cover our needs.
Angie Nelson says
Sorry, Amanda. We are located in the U.S. and most of our leads are as well. Here is a post on About that may help, however http://workathomemoms.about.com/od/workathomecareers/tp/Work-From-Home-Jobs-Canada.htm.
