In this post: If you really want to know how to get rich online this year, you’ve got so many options! Which one of these will be the inspiration for your big success story?
People start working online for a whole host of reasons. Sometimes, working online is preferred to traditional employment for reasons like avoiding a commute and controlling the work environment. Sometimes, it’s a “side hustle” to supplement income from a regular job. Others get into online work because they can fit it around the needs of their families. And more get into it just because they find something they enjoy and it just so happens that there’s a way to make money doing it.
No matter what you do to make money online, the exciting thing is that there’s theoretically no limit to how much money you can make. If you make smart decisions, continue to scale your business, and keep your eye on the bottom line, the sky really is the limit.
Before I get started, it’s important to note that “getting rich quick” schemes are often scams, and building a sustainable online income typically requires hard work, patience, and persistence. Regardless of which route you go, please do your research before investing any time or money.
How Do You Define Rich?
For many people, the unlimited earning potential is a huge selling point for working online. And don’t get me wrong — unlimited income certainly does sound nice. Making gobs of money is how many people might define being rich, but it’s not the only one.
Ramit Sethi is a world-renowned personal finance expert who turned his blog about money into a multi-million-dollar company that teaches people how to make money from all kinds of work (online and traditional). His approach began purely as financial advice—how to “be rich” in the monetary sense. But in the past several years, he decided that there’s more to being “rich” than just money.
He often challenges his audience to decide, individually, what constitutes a “rich life.” Sometimes that does mean high incomes from high-powered jobs, but sometimes it means something else. The ability to make ends meet by working part-time hours so you have more time for your family. Being able to outsource some of life’s drudgery (like cooking or cleaning) so you can spend more time doing things you value. Having the flexibility to go to the gym at 3pm. Being able to give generously.
What Rich Means to You
I love this perspective of defining your own version of a “rich life” and then working toward that end. And I love making money online as a way to achieve that rich life, however you’ve defined it.
The truth is, there are all kinds of paths to riches online, and one person’s path won’t necessarily look like someone else’s. There are some similarities, for sure, and some basic principles are fairly consistent no matter what you’re doing. But if you really want to get rich online this year, this is great news, because you’ve got so many options! Take a look at your skills and interests, and always be watching for inspiration and ideas for how you can take what you already have and turn it into something that will get you to that rich life you want.
These are some “success stories” for you to consider — people who have built businesses that generate enough money for each of them to feel “rich” however they choose to define it. Each person knew what they wanted, found a way to make money that worked for them, and then made smart decisions along the way that got them to their goal.

E-Commerce
Starting an e-commerce business and selling products online can be a lucrative way to make money on the internet. Platforms such as Amazon, Shopify, or even setting up your own website provide opportunities to reach a wide audience and generate significant income.
While it may sound tempting to sell something that everyone wants, narrowing your focus is often the best way to go since there is so much competition. So, when starting your research into e-commerce, it’s important to identify profitable niches and products that have high demand. Also, understanding the preferences and buying behaviors of your target audience is crucial for success.
I shared an interview here on the blog with Jessica Larew, an Amazon FBA seller who makes six figures just on Amazon (not to mention her other online work). You can check out that interview right here to see how she does it — and how she managed to hire her husband out of his full-time job so they could both spend significantly more time with their son. That, to her, is what having a rich life means, and she found a way to make it happen.
Direct Sales
Direct sales are a HUGE opportunity for making money — including big money — online and offline. Running a successful blog or website can go a long way toward boosting your bottom line, especially if you know how to market it well and convert the leads you get.
Not all direct sales are about your online presence, though. There’s a big element of in-person interaction, which is why direct sales can be so much fun for so many people. Jennifer Tegnerud is one woman who has a really interesting direct sales success story. She quit her job to be a stay-at-home mom and then decided that she needed to do something “grown up” to keep in touch with her “pre-mom” self and make staying home more feasible. What that turned into is a fascinating success story that you can read about right here. Jennifer works part-time hours as a Stella & Dot Stylist to make a full-time income doing something creative and exciting, that really taps into her strengths and interests.
Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing involves promoting products from various companies and earning commissions from the sales made through your unique affiliate links. To get started, the first step is to pinpoint a niche that resonates with your interests, knowledge, or passions. Ideally, this should be a topic you are well-versed in or a market offering products and services you wholeheartedly support.
Once you’ve identified your niche, begin researching what affiliate programs are available. You can explore popular affiliate networks like Amazon Associates, ClickBank, or Commission Junction, or even directly contact companies to see if they have a program.
Possibly, the more important element for success in affiliate marketing is focusing on where you will promote your affiliate products, such as a website, blog, YouTube channel, or social media presence. Whichever platform you choose, you will need to create valuable, informative content that attracts and engages your target audience. This could include product reviews, comparisons, tutorials, or other helpful resources related to your niche.
Dropshipping
Dropshipping is an e-commerce business model that allows you to sell products without holding inventory. When a customer places an order in your online store, you purchase the item from a third-party supplier, who then ships it directly to the customer. As the dropshipper, you never handle the product yourself, but you earn the profit from the sale.
To get started with dropshipping, you’ll need to choose a niche, find reliable suppliers, set up your online store using an e-commerce platform like Shopify or WooCommerce, and then drive traffic to your store through various marketing channels, such as social media, influencer marketing, paid advertising, or content marketing.
Developing and Selling Digital Products
Developing and selling digital products is another popular way to earn money online by creating and distributing intangible goods, such as ebooks, courses, templates, graphics, or software.
These products can be easily delivered to customers via download or online access, making it a convenient and scalable business model. To get started, identify a niche or topic you’re knowledgeable about and develop a product idea that addresses your target audience’s needs and preferences. Validate your product idea by conducting surveys, analyzing competitor offerings, or creating a minimal viable product (MVP) to gather feedback. Once you’ve confirmed the demand, create high-quality content for your digital product, ensuring that it is well-structured, engaging, and delivers on its promised value.
With a solid digital product in place, you will need to choose a platform to sell it, such as your own website or a third-party marketplace like Udemy, Gumroad, or Etsy, and set up a sales page showcasing its benefits, features, and pricing.
Providing Freelance Services
Providing freelance services is a way to earn money by offering your skills and expertise to clients on a project or task basis. As a freelancer, you work independently, often remotely, and can take on work from various clients simultaneously. Popular freelance services include freelance writing, graphic design, web development, digital marketing, and virtual assistance.
First, identify your marketable skills and niche to get started as a freelancer. Consider your experience, education, and passion to set what makes you unique and why potential clients would want to hire you. Then, start reaching out to your existing network, including friends, family, and former colleagues, to let them know about your freelance services. Attend industry events, join relevant online communities, and engage with potential clients on social media. Regularly search for and apply to freelance job postings on platforms and job boards.
Virtual Assistant
A virtual assistant (VA) is a remote professional who provides administrative, technical, or creative services to clients from a home office. As businesses increasingly outsource tasks to remote workers, the demand for VAs has grown significantly. Virtual assistants offer a wide range of services, making it a flexible and accessible way to earn money online.
Virtual assistants can offer a variety of services depending on their skills and experience. Some common services include email and calendar management, travel booking, data entry, customer service, social media management, content creation, and bookkeeping. Specialized VAs may offer services such as podcast editing, video editing, website design, or online research.
To become a virtual assistant, start by assessing your skills and identifying the services you can offer. Consider your previous work experience, education, and any specific expertise you possess. Determine your target market and research potential clients who may require your services.
Becoming a virtual assistant offers the flexibility to work from home, set your own hours, and choose projects that align with your skills and interests. However, success as a VA requires strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills. As with any freelance work, it’s essential to treat your virtual assistant services as a business, set competitive rates, and continuously market your services to maintain a steady stream of clients and income.
Other Online Money Making Opportunities
While these opportunities may not lead to substantial wealth, they can provide a way to earn extra income, build skills, and gain experience. The money earned through these methods can be saved or invested in other ventures, such as starting a business, creating passive income by investing in the stock market or pursuing further education or training. It’s important to approach these opportunities with realistic expectations and to use them as a stepping stone toward your larger financial goals.
- Online Surveys: Websites like Swagbucks, Survey Junkie, and Opinion Outpost offer paid surveys on various topics. While the pay per survey is relatively low, it can add up over time. This is a simple way to earn a bit of extra cash in your spare time.
- Selling on Facebook Marketplace: Facebook Marketplace allows you to sell new or used items to people in your local community. This can be a great way to make money from “retail arbitrage” or declutter your home and earn some money in the process. You can sell anything from furniture and appliances to clothing and electronics.
- Amazon Mechanical Turk: Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) is a crowdsourcing platform for businesses and researchers that allows you to complete small tasks, known as HITs (Human Intelligence Tasks). These tasks may include data entry, transcription, or image identification. Pay varies depending on the task complexity and time required.
- Online Tutoring: If you have expertise in a particular subject, you can offer online tutoring services through platforms like TutorMe, Chegg, or VIPKid. You can tutor students in academic subjects, language learning, or even music. Pay rates vary based on your qualifications and the subject matter.
- Selling Handmade Items: If you’re crafty or artistic, consider selling your handmade items on platforms like Etsy, Artfire, or Handmade at Amazon. You can create and sell anything from jewelry and clothing to home decor and digital art prints.
- Participating in Focus Groups: Companies and market research firms often seek opinions from consumers through online focus groups. Websites like Respondent, User Interviews, and FocusGroup.com connect researchers with participants. These opportunities typically pay more than online surveys but may require more time and effort.
- Website Testing: Platforms like UserTesting, Testbirds, and Trymyui pay users to test websites and apps for usability and provide feedback. Tests usually involve completing specific tasks and recording your thoughts and experiences.
- Selling Stock Photos and Footage: If you have a talent for photography or videography, you can sell your work on stock media websites like Shutterstock, iStock, or Getty Images. When someone licenses your content, you earn a royalty.
- Completing Micro-Tasks: Websites like Fiverr, TaskRabbit, and Clickworker offer a variety of small tasks that can be completed for a fee. These tasks may include writing, proofreading, graphic design, or even running errands or assembling furniture.
