Many of those looking to work from home have a specific industry in mind. Healthy living has steadily increased in popularity in recent years as Americans strive to reach a healthy weight and cut down on the risk of life-threatening diseases. As a result, many business ideas for women with the same wellness vision have become more mainstream.
Today we are looking at a number of those business opportunities. There is something for everyone as the education, skills and investments needed run the gamut from entry-level to professional.
Direct Sales
Home party plans have been providing a legitimate way for women to make money since the first Tupperware parties back in the 1950s. Today’s offerings are varied and require a low investment to get started. Most of today’s direct selling companies provide the means to not only sell face-to-face through traditional home parties but also generate sales online through replicated websites, virtual parties and social media.
There are hundreds of opportunities to choose from. Only choose a company you can fully support and personally love. The most successful consultants use their company’s products day in and day out regardless of whether they are on their way to a show. If it isn’t something you are willing to spend money on without the business aspect, pick something else.
Some of the most popular direct sales companies in the health and wellness industry are:
Fitness Coach
There are several great business ideas for personal trainers and coaches. If you want to do more than just sell fitness products as mentioned above, take it to the next level by providing one-on-one or group instruction.
You may choose to keep things low-key and low-cost by providing “boot camps” in a local park. Or, you may choose to go to your client’s home for personal training sessions.
These business options do require more background and education than a consultant position, but they can be extremely lucrative. Many coaches/trainers charge upwards of $100 per hour or more for one-on-one sessions. It’s also a good idea to speak with an attorney and your insurance agent about liability waivers and professional fitness insurance.
If you would prefer to keep things online, set up a YouTube channel for your fitness videos or sell a course at Udemy.
Personal Chef
There has been a rise in recent years of personal chefs specializing in weight loss and healthy living. For the least possibly investment most new chefs will travel to their clients’ homes to prepare meals – usually once per week. Meals are prepared, packaged and labeled with reheating instructions.
Many states require a business license and food and safety certificate to work as a personal chef. If you are preparing meals and then delivering them to your clients, a catering license may also be necessary.
Sell Produce
If all of that sounds like too much, maybe you would be better suited for selling produce locally. This can range from foraging for wild foods to sell to restaurants to nurturing a garden on your own property full of goods to sell at farmer’s markets or food co-ops. Again, check your local laws for licensing requirements. You will also likely need a resale number and pay sales tax.
Meal Planning
Many people are making a few bucks selling their meal plans online. You can use a service like e-junkie for the delivery to sell them on your own site or you can offer quick plans for $5 on Fiverr. Check out this post for our Fiverr tips.
Medical Billing and Transcription
While you may not be directly contributing to the health and wellness of the public with these home business options, you are still working in the industry. Medical billing and transcription continue to be on the rise as legitimate work-at-home opportunities and they pay extremely well.
Both of these require special education and a certificate, but that’s available online as well. CareerStep is the go-to for accredited healthcare and administrative training.
Supplement Your Income
No home business is complete without passive income opportunities. They are a must-have in my book. Why not make more money with no or minimal additional work?
Fitness Apps
Diet Bet and Healthy Wage add a gaming aspect to weight loss. Both offer some type of team or coaches club for those working with clients.
Rent Your Outdoor Equipment
We talked in a recent post about renting out your bicycle and other outdoor equipment for additional cash. This is a great way to earn a few extra hundred dollars per month in passive income. Additional rental opportunities can be found here.

I’m on a WW diet and working hard to stay on it! I’m also doing Zumba at the YMCA. I ordered from Beachbody once, but it’s pretty hard to do for my age. I like Zumba better. Love your blog, pretty interesting.
