In this post: Today we are looking at the Shiftgig app. A lot of great opportunities are waiting for those seeking the most flexible jobs to work around their busy family schedules.
Sometimes when people come here looking for advice about working from home, what they really want is advice about working on their own terms. If that describes you — when you really don’t mind working outside the home as long as it’s done completely on your terms and your schedule with a lot of flexibility, you’ll love what I’ve got for you today.
We’re talking about Shiftgig, and I can’t wait to share this with you!
What Is Shiftgig?
Shiftgig is an internet-based startup that connects available workers with available “shifts” at local events, venues, and even companies.
If you do any kind of shift work — or you don’t mind doing shift work to pick up some extra cash — you can log into Shiftgig and see what’s available. Restaurants, bars, sports events, concerts, and other shift-based employers are frequently looking
How Shiftgig Works
Shiftgig has two prongs of audiences: clients (the businesses posting gigs) and specialists (the people picking up the gigs). This post is all about making money with Shiftgig as a specialist.
Shiftgig works primarily through an app. In the app, you’ll find new and available gigs, and you can select any and all that you want to pick up. You have a contact at the company who serves as your go-between with the client and to make sure everything is running smoothly.
Once you complete your gig, you get paid! Payroll processes every Friday for the work you do the previous Saturday-Sunday work week, which means you get paid fairly quickly. Payments are typically made through direct deposit.
The other thing that happens once you complete a gig is your rating. Each client ranks each specialist after the gig is up, which helps Shiftgig fit the right specialists with the right gigs in the future. Businesses want reliable, capable workers, so it’s important to focus on doing a good job every single time if you want to keep working with Shiftgig.
Why People Love Working for Shiftgig
People love working for Shiftgig because it’s a proven way to work on your own schedule, whenever you want or need to. Filling the gap between jobs, doing part-time work, working a flexible second job, or bringing in some extra cash as an at-home parent… these are all reasons why people go with Shiftgig.
Instead of being tied to a weekly schedule that forces you to work even if you don’t have the time or need the money that week, you can pick and choose when you’ll work with Shiftgig. If you have a family obligation, an exam, or a medical procedure (for example) coming up, or if you would rather spend time with family than work every single weekend, you can simply choose not to pick up gigs.
Shiftgig focuses on work opportunities mainly in food service, hospitality, retail, logistics, warehouse, and experiential marketing. This means it’s great for all kinds of people, no matter what your background is.
There are quite a few success stories on the Shiftgig website and blog, and many of these people have these types of backgrounds:
- Veterans
- Former athletes
- Parents
- College students
- Freelancers (especially for filling in the gaps when a new business is getting off the ground)
- Baby Boomers
- Bartenders
- Chefs, cooks, and caterers
- Teachers
- Models
- Writers
- Accountants
- Musicians
- Real Estate Brokers
If any of those even remotely describes you, and you’re interested in making some extra money in your spare time doing work that interests or entertains you, you might be perfect for Shiftgig!
Getting Started with Shiftgig
If you’re ready to start finding work with Shiftgig, the first thing to do is visit the website and fill out an application to join. You’ll need a resume to upload. After that, there’s an in-person interview to introduce you to the company and qualify you for the types of gigs you’ll have access to.
Once you’re accepted into the ranks, you’ll be able to start using the Shiftgig smartphone app, which makes it really easy to find work when and where you want it, snag the gigs, and even track your time while you’re on the job. The more you work, the more gigs you’ll be able to access. The company also provides free (unpaid) training to help you qualify for even more gigs.
When a gig appears in the app, it’ll have all the specifics: time, location, type of work, pay and even uniform requirements. You can choose to pick it up or even be added to the waitlist if someone snags it before you do. You can drop your gig within 48 hours of the start time with no penalties, which is great when something unexpected comes up.
After that, it’s just a matter of selecting your gigs, showing up, doing a good job, and getting paid!
