Becoming a nurse may have been your life-long dream. You have a caregiver’s heart and knew this was a field in which you could thrive. And you did. But maybe you are ready for less hours and less stress. Perhaps it is time to focus on your family and yourself, but you aren’t ready to hang up the stethoscope just yet.
Luckily, there has been a boom in remote nursing jobs from home. Part-time schedules are even available for some roles. You don’t have to leave your nursing career behind to work from home!
What qualifications do you need for a home nursing job?
For many remote healthcare jobs, regardless of the work schedule, you will still need to have an active registered nurse or licensed practical nurse license. Some jobs require that license be in a specific state, others may have no location restrictions. Most will also require experience. These aren’t likely roles you will be able to get coming right out of college.
What kinds of roles are available for nurses to work remotely?
There are a few different career paths you can choose from if you would like to work remotely using your healthcare knowledge.
Case Management
As a remote case manager, you will provide a high level of compassion and the right mix of patient education and advocacy. Many times, this requires making outbound calls to ensure patients are taking and responding well to medications, answering questions, identifying treatment gaps and making referrals when necessary. If you are afraid you will miss that intimate patient contact, this may be a great home job to explore further. Many of these jobs will require prior RN case manager experience.
Triage Nurse
In the COVID-era, the triage nurse has become more important and in-demand than ever. Many clinics and hospitals – and patients – tried to eliminate as many unnecessary healthcare facility visits as possible. Telehealth nurses were able to step into that role as the initial patient contact.
A telehealth triage nurse is able to assess a patient’s symptoms and recommend the next step. Perhaps their needs are able to be met at their local pharmacy as opposed to the emergency room. Maybe instead of heading to the ER, urgent care will do.
This important role allows healthcare facilities to focus on those in need of immediate clinical care while still providing optimal patient care and advice.
Insurance-Related Jobs
This remote nurse job doesn’t usually require a lot of patient interaction. Instead, these jobs typically involve reviewing insurance claims for accuracy, following up on payment, and investigating whether specific procedures should be covered by a patient’s insurance. This role is a natural transition for many nursing professionals looking to move out of a patient-facing role. You are already familiar with medical terminology, treatment plans and medical records.
Freelance Writer
The public today consumes the majority of their news and knowledge via the internet, whether that be online news websites, social media, YouTube or some other web-based means. All of that content has to come from somewhere, and it has to come from someone with both knowledge of the subject and the grammar and research skills necessary.
Freelance writing within the healthcare field is on the rise. Several websites such as Verywell hire expert freelance writers to create news content, press releases and more.
Telemedicine Nurse Practitioner
If you have an advanced nursing degree and experience, nurse practitioner jobs have also been on the rise. NPs often have similar responsibilities as a doctor and may serve as primary care providers. They can even specialize in fields such as pediatric nurse practitioners.
Nurse Educator
Perhaps teaching is your true passion. Many colleges and educational institutions may consider hiring you as a part time employee to help educate the next generation of healthcare workers.
