Starting a Niche Site: Where to Find Blog Topics

Now that the major headaches are out of the way when it comes to starting a niche site, your next task is brainstorming blog topics. If you read the Choosing a Niche post and chose something that you love, know or want to know, you are ahead of the game when it comes to brainstorming content. You are your market, therefore you know what the market is searching for and you can provide it.

If you are at a loss initially, or perhaps in a slump down the road, there are ways to overcome the lack of ideas to write about.

  • Hit the forums in your niche. What are people asking? What current trends are all the buzz?
  • Watch your fellow niche bloggers. Always get subscribed to the leaders in your niche. Your goal is to move up in your niche. You need to be looking up to get there. These are the trendsetters and the ones on the up-and-up with what is new. See what they are talking about.
  • Are there new products on the horizon? We all want to know what new and improved products are coming down the pipeline. Stay abreast of these things, and share them with your readers.
  • When all else fails, hit your keyword research tools. What are your potential visitors searching for? Which topics do not already have a lot of coverage. Google’s Wonder Wheel or Google Trends are great for branching out into blog topics you may not have thought about.

When you start writing those blog posts and articles for content marketing, do your research if you do not have enough personal experience to draw from. Your number one priority is to prove you know what you are talking about. People can see horse hockey a mile away. When doing your research, look at the following:

  • When was the information written? If it was 2005 or 2007, find something newer. Let’s face it, in our constant state of fast information evolution even items from 2009 are now far too out of date to use. Do what you can to provide the most relevant and accurate information.
  • Who wrote that? This is another reason to follower your leaders. If you are using Joe Schmuck’s content as a resource, you really do not know where he got that information. Even if his content is dated 2009, he may be using resources from 2003. Always use expert authors to draw information from.
  • How can I add value? If this is a topic that has been covered six ways from Sunday, it is necessary that you can add something unique or above average in your content. Don’t just regurgitate what is already out there. Put your own spin on things.

    Well, I started working on my other site last night. Since I have relevant info on my personal site, I’m going to link to them on the new one.

    Tonight I’ll be working on it some more. A friend of mine is trying to help me work out some of the kinks I’m having with featured pictures. I’m a dunce and having a hard time. Thank goodness for all of my knowledgeable friends.
