My Chat with After5PC on Starting a Web Design Business

Web design and graphics are big business these days. Millions of us have an online presence, yet we have no skills when it comes to customizing our site’s design or making those nifty banners and buttons. Even I have to outsource those tasks. Today I’m interviewing Bryan from After5PC.net on starting a web design business.

What was Your Background in Web Design prior to Starting Your Home Business?

I started designing websites as a hobby when I was a young teenager. I remember playing games on our “ancient” family computer one day when I noticed a Microsoft Frontpage selection on the menu and always wondered what that was for. It peaked my curiosity for days, but since I knew nothing about it, I never ventured to click on it, afraid that I might crash our computer. So I did the usual — play solitaire, mine sweep, and other simple games that still excited kids at that time. I finally gave in to my curiosity, clicked on the program, and found myself even more confused than ever when the program popped out! I was determined to “crack the code” and hence, my journey into website publishing and designing began.

To make the long story short, I have since advanced my skills and knowledge. But if it wasn’t for that curiosity a long long time ago at my parents’ house, I don’t think I would have been doing what I love now.

Why Did You Decide to Go Into Business for Yourself?

That drive was always inside me  — to be your own boss, being independent and doing things your way, being in business for yourself. It’s the ultimate American dream!

What Startup Costs Were Involved?

Virtually nothing. I designed a site, registered a domain, setup hosting…and prayed!

How do You Market Your Business to Obtain New Clients and Customers?

Most of my clients are from word-of-mouth referrals — clients telling their friends and colleagues about my work. It’s a very old method of marketing, but I think it works best. After all, most people will trust the recommendations of their friends than venture out in the dark. Also, doing “charity” work is a good method to get your foot inside the door.

What Challenges Have You Faced in Your Business?

One of my big challenges is when I receive multiple project requests at once. I hate to turn down and refer potential clients elsewhere, but I also have to be realistic. I don’t want to accept all projects and compromise quality work.

What Skills are Necessary to be Successful in This Type of Business?

Time management skills apply a lot in this type of business. Procrastination is your enemy. Although graphic/artistic and programming skills are important, they mean nothing at all if you don’t know how to manage your time.

What are the Top Resources for Gathering Information on, or Getting Started in Your Industry?

There are several sites out there, including webmaster forums and blogs. I use Google extensively and bookmark accordingly.

This was interesting, I’ve found Web Design to be fun, and a way to put myself into a page. It’s nice to know that others have enjoyed it and have made a living off of it as well. Word of mouth is a fantastic way to get word out to people!
