Demi Karpouzos is sitting down with us this week to tell us about her home business journey as a business strategy coach.
Tell us a little about your coaching business.
I help women entrepreneurs who are in the first 5 years of their business, get more clients. I marry mindset with marketing strategies because I’ve found that owning a business requires us to get out of our comfort zones in order to grow our business.
It makes it a lot easier when we have a plan laid out that excites us and we have someone there in the trenches with us. I meet with my clients virtually either on Skype or on the phone.
What was your motivation to work from home?
Time freedom has always been very important to me and working from home is in alignment with a more flexible schedule . I don’t spend time battling traffic, my overhead costs are reduced and I love being home with my four-legged kid 🙂 Not having to put on business attire each day is an added bonus.
What was your first step in getting started?
The first step in starting my business (other than getting certified) was to map out a business plan. I structured my hours of operation, set my financial goals, mapped out the marketing tactics I was going to implement, what systems I would need (filing system, online tools etc.), and I set a daily practice/routine each morning to put me in the right mindset. With the plan in place, my first step was getting clients. Now I have to say that at the beginning I was busy being busy but not productive. I was busy getting my website up and doing other things that didn’t get me in front of prospective clients. Essentially I was hiding because the revenue generating tasks were the ones that would require the most from me. I didn’t realize it at the time but my dwindling bank account was evidence and motivated me to get out there.
What has been your biggest surprise along the way?
The biggest surprise for me has been the fact that my business growth is a reflection of my personal growth. It has been when I have taken a chance on myself or acted despite the fear I’ve felt (rejection, not knowing enough etc.), that I’ve seen huge shifts in my business.
If there is one thing you could go back and do over what would it be?
I would have taken more chances sooner. Getting in front of prospective clients and hiring people (staff, coaches, mentors)
Where do you recommend others getting started in your industry turn for help?
Whether you’re just getting started or you want to take your business to the next level, seek out people who are where you want to be and follow them online (social media, subscribe to their newsletter), you can reach out to them ask them to mentor you or hire them. It will help you get to your goals in a faster and more efficient way.
What’s one online business tool you happily pay for month after month.
I happily pay for my email marketing software. It allows me to stay in touch with my community (subscribers, prospective clients and clients) so that I can continue to cultivate a relationship with them.
