6 Websites That Offer Free Online Courses

Picking up new skills is essential to being a successful home business owner. You will likely start out maintaining your website or blog, handling your marketing yourself, troubleshooting tech problems, and much more. It can be expensive to learn these skills in a formal setting. However, there are several sites that offer free online courses.

HP Learning Center provides free online computer training for everything from Microsoft Office products to using Bluetooth to Facebook to choosing a color scheme for your business marketing campaign. Whether your educational needs are for your business or family, there is something in here for everyone.

3. W3Schools.com is one of my go-to resources for HTML. They also provide free tutorials for CSS, XML, SQL and many other programming languages that you may need to know from time to time if you maintain an online presence.

Go Get These NOW!

I have spent the last week or so digging for the perfect program, book, whatever-it-is-going-to-take-mastermind-group to get me moving towards my next big goal. I’ve spent hours searching to no avail. I know what I want.

  • I don’t just want an accountability partner, I want a plan.
  • I don’t want something too tied into one type of online business, I want something that I can apply to my business, my blogs, etc.
  • I don’t want something all “look inside yourself, pray to God, you shall receive.” Perhaps I have a different kind of relationship with God than everyone else, but He has made it clear repeatedly that if I want something I need to get off my butt and do something about it.

You would think this would be easy to find, right? Nope. I doubt if online marketing books written in 2001 are going to help me much at this point.

Yesterday however, I received an email from Dave Navarro (no, not that Dave Navarro). He is going “offline” for a spell, so he is making all of his Launch Coach workshops available to the masses. These workshops typically run $197 each. You can get them for free or for a donation. (I think you should throw him a few bones if you can. It’s good karma.)

What’s In The Launch Coach?

  1. Creating Products That Sell
  2. Building a Responsive List
  3. High-Conversion Sales Pages
  4. Mastering Your Sales Funnel
  5. Optimizing Your Blog for Sales
  6. Becoming Incredibly Productive
  7. Becoming a Big Player in Your Niche
  8. Getting Affiliates to Sell for You
As you can see, you can apply the majority of these eight workshops to a variety of online businesses. That’s the beauty of info products. They may be written around marketing a widget, but those marketing techniques can likely be applied to anything you are selling.

Anyhoo…go grab these, and get the links saved. I’m going to start a workshop ASAP. You will likely be reading more about what I’m doing in the days and weeks to come. I want you to be able to jump right in and join me.

I have to quit typing now because Zemanta has my sidebar full of creepy pictures of Dave Navarro. I wish this guy’s name was Nikki Sixx…Oh! There we go. Thanks, Zemanta. ;)

6 Tips for Avoiding Work at Home Distractions

One of my visitors left a comment recently asking how to stay focused when working from home. I tried to help, I really did. But frankly, the post I wrote added more distractions to the already unfocused. I am horrible in this department. I found you outside help, though! Holly from The Work at Home Woman has stopped by to get us focused today. Let’s start the year off on the right foot!

Guest Post by Holly Reisem Hanna

For many women working at home is the ideal situation; earning money for doing something that you love, spending more time with your family and financial freedom and security, but working at home also has it challenges. One of the most frequent complaints from women who work at home is the constant distractions of family members, household chores and other temptations like the TV, however with a little planning and due diligence, distractions can be kept at bay.

Here’s how to get started eliminating the distractions in your home.

Create a Schedule for Yourself: When working at home it is easy to get distracted by the laundry, household chores, TV and other family members that require your attention. Start by setting regular office hours, this allows you to create a time slot for each of the day’s activities and it communicates to others when your work-time and play-time is. If you have small children you may need to schedule your work around their naps or another caregiver’s schedule so that you can have a good chunk of time to work uninterrupted. By creating a schedule you create a place for all of the activities in your day keeping you on track.

Make a To-Do List: Have you ever sat in front of your computer pondering what task you should tackle first – and the next thing you know you’ve spent an hour distracted by emails, phone calls and social media? To avoid wasted time, create a to-do list the night before (remember to prioritize your tasks), this way you have clear idea in your head of what you need to accomplish and you don’t sit around wasting time getting started.

Turn off the Noise: TV, email notifications, phone calls, pets, children and spouses are some of the constant distractions people face when they are trying to work at home. By creating a separate office space you can work in a clean and quiet environment where you’re able to at least eliminate the constant reminders of household chores. Next filter out unnecessary noise producers by shutting the office door and turning off email notifications and cell phones. By creating a work environment that is free from distractions you are more easily able to focus on the task at hand.

Manage Your Email: By far the biggest distraction for home-based employees. Start managing your inbox by only replying to emails twice a day, once in the morning and again in the afternoon. Communicate to others what times you answer your emails by setting up an autoresponder. Next, set up filters so that only priority emails go into your inbox and unsubscribe from unnecessary newsletters and subscriptions. Last, create templates for frequently communicated items.

Buy Time, Not Things: To alleviate distractions like household chores and cooking, stop purchasing stuff and spend a little money buying some extra time for you.  Try using a house cleaning service, a personal concierge to run errands, or a menu delivery service to take unwanted tasks from your to-do list. This will allow your mind to stopping focusing on your household activities and start focusing on your business.

Stop Multitasking: For most of our lives we have been taught to multi-task, and in some situations it is called for, but the majority of the time it ends up being inefficient. By single-tasking, you can fully focus on the task at hand and complete it without interruptions. Give yourself a block of time to complete the task, and stop trying to watch the news, catch up on email and answer phone calls, you’ll be surprised at how much more efficient you’ll become.

Distractions are a normal part of working at home, but with a little planning and due diligence you can be successful and thrive while working at home.

Conferences for Women: Spark & Hustle with Tory Johnson

With more and more women losing their jobs and struggling to make ends meet, many are turning to starting a business. As a business owner, I can tell you there is nothing more rewarding than being self-employed and finally being the one person that is in control of my success, income and self-esteem. If you are considering starting your own business, you may have several great ideas and no direction as to how to implement them.

When I heard Tory Johnson was setting up Spark & Hustle conferences for women aspiring to be successful business owners, I was intrigued. I have seen Tory on Good Morning America numerous times. I know her personal story of being fired from her dream job, having no direction and bootstrapping her own successful business. She is now sharing her entrepreneurial secrets to help other women take those great ideas and make them into profitable businesses.

As someone on everyone’s list, I was a little concerned at first as to what the price would be. I frequently get offers for one-day conferences ranging in price from $1,000 to over $5,000. I know that isn’t feasible for most us. However, I am very pleased with Spark & Hustle’s pricing. This is a three-day conference, and it is priced at only $495. There are also convenient payment options available.

The 2011 Spark & Hustle National Tour Schedule:

Los Angeles: February 3 – 5
Tulsa: February 10 – 12
New York: March 10 – 12
Dallas: March 24 – 26
Chicago: April 7 – 9
Boston: May 12 – 14
Orlando: May 19 – May 21
Atlanta: July 21 – 23

These conferences are about results, your results. The purpose is to implement you with the tools to take the short road to success. You will come out informed with the strategies and game plan to take action on your dreams.

Because you are a reader of The Work at Home Wife, I have been given a discount code to share with you. Use code WAHW10 at checkout to receive 10% of your ticket price. You can use this code for as many conferences as you would like and in conjunction with the convenient payment plans. Get registered now at http://sparkandhustle.com/register-now/.

As always, I wish you most success online.

Product Launch Planning & Product Launch Training

Product Launch Support Specialist Certification

As someone who is always looking ahead to the next item on my bucket list, I recently started researching into something I would like to accomplish next year. This is a project that is in a whole new direction for me, therefore I didn’t know much about the logistics. As I researched into product launch planning, I coincidentally received an email from VAClassroom for their upcoming Product Launch Training course.

I have had the pleasure of attending several of VAClassroom’s training programs. Though their target market is service providers, that hasn’t been the reason for my taking their courses. Whether it has been their Blog Marketing course, Ning community building, or other avenues of social media, I have always chosen my courses based on what they can do for MY business. When I attended their webinar about their upcoming course last week, I was happy to hear they are now incorporating this objective into their course study. They are not just for service providers anymore, they are geared towards every online business owner.

VAClassroom’s next course is a 4-Week training in product launches. It covers everything from beginning to end, analyzing the potential product to relaunching at a later date. Videos and training materials will be sent out at the beginning of each week for you to work through at your convenience, followed by a weekly live discussion to talk about what you are learning.

One of my favorite things about VAClassroom’s courses is the amount of  materials you receive. I keep a big 3-ring binder full of checklists and accompanying written material that I have received from each of the training courses I have taken. The steps required are always available in text format, and I love that. You also receive access to their community for ongoing support, and retain access of the learning material indefinitely.

Most product launch training courses I have seen online have been priced well into the thousands of dollars. They are also put together by self-proclaimed “gurus” which always gives me pause regarding the marketing methods they promote. I have never seen an unsavory marketing tactic taught by VAClassroom, and their upcoming Product Launch Training is priced at $395. Split payments are available.

If you need help with your upcoming product launch planning, take a look into this course. Even if you can’t attend the live session this time around, get on their mailing list. I know this one was filling up fast, but I’m sure they will offer it again or offer it as a self-paced course.

That link again is Product Launch Training.

I Wrote All These Posts, Now What?

It’s Day 18 of Ultimate Blog Challenge! I believe I have 22 under my belt right now. I have been writing so much, I can’t seem to stop. So, I wondered what was next. On Tuesday I decided to take the plunge into my next eBook. I had planned to do that last month, but didn’t get around to it. With my increased motivation, I decided going forward with it now was a good idea.

I’m excited to be sending out details on The Little Guy’s Guide to Affiliate Marketing to my subscribers within the next couple of days. I love sending goodies their way for staying on my list and helping me build a following. It’s more of that good karma.

The Little Guy’s Guide to Affiliate Marketing is a good accompaniment to my current free report, The Little Guy’s Guide to Starting a Virtual Assistant Business. Both focus on starting an online business with a tiny budget. Both include the little tricks I figured out going it on my own in the beginning when I couldn’t pay for expensive e-courses and mentoring.

This is the kind of thing I love to do. It makes me proud to help out the fellow “little guy” who doesn’t know up from down when getting started. We all deserve an empire!

I was hoping to get it ready to release and added to NAMS4Kids for their Friday launch. However, I’m still masterminding with a couple of other eBook writers about my course of action for this material.

If you would like to be kept in the loop and get a sneak peek at The Little Guy’s Guide to Affiliate Marketing, please get signed up for my email list. I never share information and I won’t bombard you with emails. I usually send one out on Fridays with that week’s post. Occasionally, I will send a special email if I find something truly spectacular I think you need to know.

I’m really excited about this eBook and I hope to see ya subscribing!

Google Analytics Workshop

The other night I found myself clicking around in my admin panel. I wander in there from time-to-time to try to remember the things I can do with my blog that I forgot. From there, I ended up in my Google Analytics account for what I’m pretty sure was close to an hour.

I have always been fascinated with Google Analytics. I started out the Site Stats plug-in on my blog because I didn’t want to mess with the coding-business for Google Analytics. It didn’t really provide me with what I was looking for and when I saw a GA plug-in available, I jumped on it.

I have had it installed for a month or so now, and I really like it. It provides me with a ton of information that I didn’t have available before; referring sites, bouncerate, page views per visitor, time spent on my blog, etc. The list goes on and on.

However, as I spent my hour over there, I realized there is maybe 1/4 of the information that I actually understand, another 1/4 that I think I know what it means, and the other 1/2 I have no clue. Typical.

As fate would have it, I saw Lynn Terry tweet about an upcoming Google Analytics Workshop the very next day. I jumped at the chance to learn more about the things I’m possibly missing. Especially considering the price is only $10.

The workshop will take place on August 30. Included in the price is a checklist to make sure everything is running correctly (yay, checklist!), an audio recording of the workshop and the transcript. So, even if you aren’t available at the given time you won’t miss a thing.

I’m really excited about this one. Especially considering it is one more thing I can add to my Virtual Assistant bag of tricks. Inevitably, the things I learn help both me and my clients. The price is certainly right at only $10. I have already signed up for the Google Analytics Workshop, and I do hope to “see” several of you guys there too!

More Online Learning Success

The Work at Home Wife took a summer break from the Online Learning Success series, but it’s back to school time! The kiddies are heading back to the classroom, so why shouldn’t we?

This recommended site came to me via an email newsletter, and the price is what intrigued me the most. I’ve mentioned my obsession with cheap and VTC goes above and beyond in that category.

VTC provides online software tutorials at an amazing price. For $30 per month (that’s per MONTH folks, not per online training module), you can learn a number of new skills. For the savvy blogger; WordPress, SEO, blogging, etc. For the online business owner; Photoshop, PowerPoint, Access, E-Commerce and more.

There are hundreds of tutorials available. Most range in time from 7-10 hours. Even at just one tutorial per month, that breaks down to around $3 per hour for online training success. From someone who has paid for quite a few online training modules, that’s a really good deal. I have paid well over $100 for programs less in-depth.

The Work at Home Wife gives VTC a thumbs up, for both their pricing and for the variety of programs they offer. Hop over and get signed up for their free trial membership. Then come back to share your online learning success story.
