Working at home is such a blessing for so many. It opens up the door to unlimited freedoms in so many ways. But with that freedom comes a lot of responsibility. Running a home-based business isn’t easy.
If you find yourself afraid to leave the house because something might come up that requires immediate attention, fear no more. There are so many great apps that will allow you to conduct (only the most important) business from anywhere.
LastPass – Every day I thank the person that created LastPass. It has been a huge lifesaver over and over again. It’s available as a browser extension (free) and app ($12 per year). It saves all of your passwords for accessing your favorite sites from anywhere. It will also remind you when it’s time to change your passwords (and generate strong ones for you). It was a big help in identifying vulnerable websites when the Heartbleed Virus was going around, too.
Gmail – Most smartphones come with Gmail installed. Make sure yours is setup and hooked up to all of your Gmail accounts. (Did you know you can receive and answer your business emails in Gmail with Google Apps for Work?)
WordPress – This is an app for the bloggers in the crowd. Post and publish on the go. Approve and respond to comments. This won’t replace blogging from your desktop, but it is nice to have when you are away from home and remember you forgot to include a very important link or piece of info in today’s post.
SproutSocial – This is my new favorite tool for social media management. And one of my required features when choosing a management software was a smartphone app. I want to be able to post updates, monitor conversations and receive alerts on the go. SproutSocial does that.
Todoist – This is the only task manager to date that I have stuck with for any considerable amount of time. It has both an app and browser extensions. You can set up tasks as a one-time event or recurring. This is my go-to reminder for everything from daily client work to remembering what Facebook Groups share posts on what days of the week.
Pocket – As an online entrepreneur, I’m on the internet more waking hours than I’m not. I’m constantly running into things I want to read but don’t have time for at the moment. The GetPocket.com app allows me to save them for later and read them wherever.
PayPal – Send money. Receive money. Transfer money. Enough said.
Fitness Pal – I have a love/hate relationship with Fitness Pal. As a busy work-at-homer eating right and exercising quickly move to the bottom of the priority list daily. Fitness Pal sends you little notifications throughout the day – you forgot to log your lunch, you forgot to log your exercise. Yeah. Let me get that done now…
Dropbox – There are a few reasons to have this one on your phone. For one, you can access your files from anywhere. The second reason you will love it is if you regularly take photos for your blog. This syncs your phone to your desktop for easy access.
Mint.com – This one will let you know if they spot unusual activity or if you have a bill due. That’s always handy! You can also check your account balances, create a budget and more.
Apps are not meant to keep you tied to your virtual desk every moment of the day. Live your life. Enjoy the freedom you have worked so hard to attain.
