Can I Work From Home?

I get this question a lot, “Can I work from home?” My answer is always a loud and excited “Yes!” However when I start talking about running a business from home, I see people shutting down and trying to runaway.

There are usually two negative connotations that come to mind in people when the phrase “home business” is mentioned. One involves multi-level-marketing. The other involves investments, debt, loans and risk. When I talk about starting a home business in our Internet Age, neither of those apply.

can i work from home

When I start talking about reputable home based business options, I will never speak of MLM. It is rarely a lifelong business model. I have never done it. I don’t expect you to do it. If that is what you are looking for, you won’t find it here.

I also don’t talk about business options that involved a huge investment or risk that will make your husband blow a gasket. I didn’t start my business with thousands of dollars. If you are visiting this site, I doubt you have thousands of dollars lying around for a risky investment. You won’t find that here either.

When someone asks me, “Can I work from home?” what they are going to hear are low-cost options. In most cases, we’re talking 15 to 100 dollars to start marketing and possibly learn a new skill if needed. A box of business cards is going to run around $10 if you are marketing locally. Purchasing a domain name and your first month of hosting is around $15 is you go through HostGator.

When it comes to running a business from home, the opportunities are endless. If you have an office background, there is transcription or virtual services. If you are a domestic diva ala Martha Stewart, think laundry service, cake baking, errand running, etc. If you are a writer at heart, get into freelance writing or affiliate marketing through a blog. If none of these ideas appeal to you, don’t give up.

Grab a pen and paper and turn off the noise for 30 minutes. Write down 5-10 things that are your passions, problems or fears. Now brainstorm how you can turn those things into a home-based business you will love.

3 Secrets to Writing Remarkable Resource Boxes

When I first started article marketing, a lot of weight was put on bio boxes. This is where you get to talk about yourself and how smart and accomplished you are. This was where you told your reader how lucky they are to run across your article because you are an expert in your niche. Over time, things have shifted. We now put more focus on the resource box.

What’s the difference? There are a few key differences in your approach to bio versus resource. You are no longer playing up your achievements. Fact of the matter is, your reader doesn’t care. If you have just provided them with invaluable information, they don’t need further convincing that you know what you are doing. They already trust you. You are now going to use this box to show you are a further “resource” for your reader.

How? There are a few key steps into moving your reader into further action.

  1. Flow - Unlike a bio box which stops abruptly and is suddenly talking about something different (i.e. you), your resource box should read as though it is a part of the article. It should sound as though it is a closing paragraph as opposed to a different topic.
  2. Invite - One way to accomplish that flow is to start your resource box with a phrase such as, “I now invite you to…”. These statements make a smooth transition from your article into the next step you want your reader to take. Invite them back to your website to learn more.
  3. Brand - It is a good time to brand yourself and your services or products. “I invite you to visit my site for more (anchor text a targeted keyword phrase). You can there receive your free (anchor text another targeted keyword phrase related to your free report). Don’t forget those links, and don’t forget to anchor them with a targeted keyword phrase. This will help bump you up in the SERPs, as search engines will associate your site with those choice keyword phrases.

If you are paying close attention, a few differences that stand out here are:

  • You are replacing “me” or “we” as was previously used in bio boxes with “you” and “yours.”
  • You are delivering, confirming, connecting and motivating your new reader with your branded message and a promise.
bio boxes resource boxes

I am a huge fan of the shift. To be honest, I very rarely read bio boxes for the reason I stated above, I didn’t care about the writer’s long list of accomplishments. It doesn’t have any impact on my personal success. What is going to have an impact is what the writer can further do for me. That little box now includes me, not excludes me.

What do you think? Love it, or hate it?

Search Engine Optimization Results: Survey Says…

On the quest for passive income, it is absolutely imperative to acquire search engine optimization results. If you don’t, you will never have a completely passive income. You will always need to be promoting or marketing in some way to receive traffic. There are hundreds of different techniques and programs available to teach you SEO. It can be confusing and overwhelming.

I have personally struggled with search engine optimization results for the last 6 months. I went from not having a clue what SEO was, to thinking I knew what I was doing and obviously didn’t, to now having at least a good enough understanding that I am seeing results from my recent efforts.

In my attempt to understand why it has taken me so long to “get it,” I’d like to know your experiences with search engine optimization. Have you had the same problems I have had? Have you researched, purchased and practiced to no avail? Did you get it from Day One?

Please take a few moments to answer my survey. I’d love to hear that I’m not the only one that has struggled.

Search Engine Marketing on Squidoo

With the plethora of marketing avenues available, there is a lot of confusion about where to focus efforts. One popular question deals with search engine marketing on Squidoo and Hubpages. Today’s post comes from my inbox.

Angie, I’d like to get started in affiliate marketing. I’m not sure whether to start my own site, or just build Squidoo Lens and Hubpages. What are your thoughts?

Search Engine Marketing on Squidoo

I have followed a few of the Squidoo Super Marketers like Tiffany Dow and PotPie Girl. Squidoo certainly serves a relevant purpose in online marketing. I don’t necessarily agree with building your online empire on Squidoo, however. I know there are some people that have hundreds lenses and no website or blog. Each Lens is built around a certain product the owner is an affiliate of. Not a huge fan of building an empire this way.

Here’s Why:

1. Building a list is imperative, otherwise you are constantly going to be chasing the next buying customer. If you build trust and compile a list, you always have ready buyers. Remember, those big Squidoo teachers like PotPieGirl and Tiffany Dow have a list that they are marketing to. They also have their own websites and blogs. At the end of the day, they have a list. You should, too!

2. I’m not a big fan of focusing my content on sites I don’t own. I can’t control what goes on over there, or what the long-term reputation of the site will hold. There is a lot of spam on Squidoo. If that starts negatively impacting Lens search rankings, then you are starting over from Day One anyway.

3. These guru girls still encourage backlinking to your lens. Why not start sending those backlinks to your own site from the get-go?

4. If you know how to do keyword research and analyze what can easily be ranked for, getting to Page 1 for a search term doesn’t take long. Don’t give that SEO to Squidoo, keep it!

5. If I am going to write 500 articles or blog posts on products I love, I would like them all in one little space where visitors can click around for days if they would like to. Another Lens Builder isn’t screaming for their attention in my sidebar. That one little space is my website or blog. I have 100% of my visitor’s attention here.

If you don’t know what niche you want, going the Search Engine Marketing on Squidoo route may be useful to gauge interest and potential. If you already know where your niche lies, build your website or blog from the start. Then use Squidoo or Hubpages as you would  article marketing, to point back to your site. Use it to showcase yourself as an expert in your new niche. But, don’t use it as a long-term business model.

Go Out on a Limb…

That’s where the fruit is! Becoming a successful home business owner requires taking some risks. There is no cookie-cutter method that will take you from Point A to Point $. From time to time, you have to get out of your comfort zone to grow.

This may mean adding a new service, changing your product list, or making an investment. Whatever it is, remember you will never get anywhere unless you take that first step.

Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark; professionals built the Titanic. ~Author Unknown

Sometimes you have to jump off the cliff to grab a star. Do something new for your business today. Take the road less traveled, you never know where it will take you.

Introducing Yourself…Again

I recently had to prepare a post to introduce myself on a blog tour I participated in. It was an enlightening process. One you should do also.  It’s not only good for introducing yourself to new readers, it is also a good time to reflect on your goals and direction.

The reason? You actively have to take a look back at what you have been putting out there. You have to look at if your goals are being met. You have to think about if you are coming through on your promises to the online world. You start looking ahead as you are looking back.

For me, it was a real eye-opener. Not in a bad way, just a great analysis. Allot some time to introduce yourself to the world again. Even if it is only to revamp your About Me page.

Introduce Yourself Again

Is your mission statement still the same?

Are you still happy with the wording?

Has your audience changed a little?

Are your top-trafficked posts the ones you want them to be, or do you need to do some SEO work on the posts you would like to make the list next time?

Let me know the outcome!

Should I Worry About Alexa Web Statistics?

Alexa Web Stats
Alexa Web Statistics

A lot of good people waste a lot of precious time worrying about Alexa web statistics. For the standard blogger, it is just that: time wasted.

Alexa is another page ranking site. This one owned by Amazon. I first heard about Alexa in February when I started this blog. Another new blog came onto the scene at the same time making promises of teaching the little guy to create the best blog. I was up for the challenge.

One of the first they wanted you to do was download the Alexa Toolbar, then make sure you were on their list so you could come back to their new site each morning. Well, I don’t download anything without finding out what it is and why it’s important.

What I found on my search was this; if you install the Alexa toolbar, every site you visit gets a little tick with Alexa. You are improving their Alexa traffic rating. AHA! That’s why they want me to download this toolbar and come back every morning, so they can get their Alexa ranking up.

From Alexa:

Alexa’s traffic rankings are based on the usage patterns of Alexa Toolbar users and data collected from other, diverse sources over a rolling 3 month period.

Why did they care of their Alexa ranking? This was a group of bloggers looking for ad sponsorship. Ad networks take Alexa ranking into account in deciding where to spend their money (at least they did at that time).

Most of us little bloggers aren’t looking to rope in the big ad networks. I don’t have paid ads or links available on my site, and if I did I would give my fellow little bloggers and business owners first dibs. I think they need it more than the big guy does. To me, Alexa is just one more thing to obsess over if I let it.

Of course I did, at first. That’s where things got even more bizarre. When researching how to improve Alexa ranking, suggestions went more towards manipulation and shady tactics than actually building a quality site.

Examples I saw over and over (even from reputable bloggers):

  • Install the toolbar and set your site as your homepage so it gets that click each day.
  • Convince your readers to install the toolbar and visit every day.
  • Install the Alexa widget. At least one person is bound to click it to see what it is. That will give you a hit with Alexa.
  • Write or blog about Alexa. The people that will search for those posts or articles are probably using that toolbar.
  • Write content for webmasters, even if that’s not your niche. Webmasters use the toolbar.
  • Buy links for traffic from those toolbar-using webmasters.
  • Hire someone to promote your site in webmaster forums so they will stop by.

YUCK! You have far better things to invest your time and money on than worrying about biased Alexa web statistics…like informative content and networking. Especially if you aren’t looking for sponsorship or to sell links. Write for YOUR readers. Build your traffic ethically. Your Alexa ranking will take care of itself.

Are you obsessing about Alexa? Please tell me why.

The Disadvantages of Resale Rights

The Disadvantages of Resale Rights
The Disadvantages of Resale Rights

I have been on a binge of info products lately. As can be expected, there have been both hits and misses. The hits you may see my blog review on, the misses don’t deserve my blog space. In general, one big miss for me is purchasing and reselling master resale rights products. There are some big disadvantages of resale rights products.

First a rundown of definitions:

Giveaway Rights – These products cannot be resold and you would normally receive them for free also. However, they can be given away for free to your list or as a bonus product for something you are selling. You may or may not be able to modify the product. It’s up to the author.

Resale Rights (RR) – Resale Rights are usually purchased. You can then resell the product to others. However, you cannot pass along the rights to the product. If the purchaser wants to resell it, they need to go back to the original author to purchase the rights. These usually cannot be modified.

Master Resale Rights (MRR) - With MRR, you cannot only just resell the product, you can give resale rights to those who purchase the product from you. The general line of thinking is that these will warrant a higher price. These normally cannot be modified.

Private Resale Rights (PLR) - Private Resale Rights can be treated as your own. You can modify the content. You can sell or pass on giveaway, resale or master resale rights to the product. You can put your name on it. You can sell it, give it away or use it as online content.

One of the products I purchased recently was a MRR product. This wasn’t disclosed to me prior to my purchase. My first indication was when I went to download the product and saw the graphics had a different title than what I had purchased. There was no mention of the original author of the content anywhere, but the recording was not a female and that’s the gender of the person I purchased it from.

The Disadvantages of MRR:

1. When handled as in my above scenario, it comes across as shady marketing. There is a reason its true origin wasn’t disclosed I believe. I wouldn’t have bought the product.

2. MRR can go on forever. Your neighbor blog can resell it. The blog down the street can resell it. Now all their friends can resell it. Pretty soon, everyone is reselling it…all for different price points. One has it for $7, one has it for $97, and everywhere in between.

3. You can’t make it your own. No matter how much you personally know about the topic, you can’t add your spin. You can’t make yourself the expert.

We all run low on time, energy and creativity sometimes. There is a time and place for purchasing content. If you feel the need to get a product or some content up ASAP, I suggest going with PLR.

Most PLR can be purchased at a very reasonable price. These are my suggestions for using PLR:

1. Look for those that are sold in limited quantities. You don’t want everyone in the world having the same info.

2. Break it all down and build it back up. Add your some of your own content to the piece. If you get it in a pack, use a little from this piece and a little from the piece until it is original.

3. Go with a reputable source. I have seen some PLR that is junk. There is no useful information, and it is full of spelling and grammar errors.

4. In line with Number 3, read it yourself before putting your name on it. Is it worthy of being attached to your name?

Have you used PLR? What tips can you add?

If you need quality PLR, I suggest Nicole Dean’s PLR. She meets all of my above standards.
